Yeah Chris, it would be a great new spot to explore. I think I’ll be shooting for sometime before March 1st next year- the thought of walking all the way from highway 50 isn’t too appealing to me, especially since it’s so low and dry and unlikely to have snow cover in springtime. Either way, it’s nice to have some ideas on the backburner, eh?

I really want to traverse the West Elks, it will be entirely new to me. I am thinking early April and starting by Blue Mesa. Looks like a lot of mellow peaks but I bet bet there is some good skiing to be had.

Those cranes winter at the wildlife refuge immediately south of where I grew up. My first summer job was manual labor at that refuge, making sure the birds had a place to chill in the coming months. It sucked, it was over 100 every day (wonder why I like winter?). But I still visit it every Xmas to check out the birds.
