I tried this on short notice on my gravel bike with 700×38 tires in 2021. I started from the south and made to to the Snake River Trailhead where the railroad ballast starts. I had to bail to the road. I stayed off the trail and did a loop via Palouse Falls, Dayton, Waitsburg, Walla Walla, Rte 124, and Pasco. It was great!
