I was testing these in exactly the conditions you describe- hardpack, so yeah, they were a handful. Not many skis were as damp as those old Monsters, either!

There is way more going on here than the 17m sidecut. That said, I agree, the tails are too stiff for the ski making them very difficult in anything but good or better conditions (have fun navigating a big, hard, crap bump field on these).

and I guess I am too used to Head Monsters that I can find no semblance of “damp” while one the 106’s.

Sidecuts that short will tend to be very hooky, unless there is a lot going on with the profile as well. Steep skiing and hooky don’t go together well at all. As the late great Shane McConkey said, sidecut is the enemy of the powder ski.

Interesting. Maybe Dan just had bad luck. Or you’ve had good luck 🙂

While the VWerks Katana and the BMT use the same construction techniques, they do have different dimensions. I’ve been surprised in the past when 2 skis that are only a few mm different but otherwise identical ski very differently, even in terms of the feel. Regardless, I wasn’t skiing the BMT or any other ski in ideal conditions, so maybe it was just the conditions. I certainly thought they were “nervous” as you say- but perhaps that wouldn’t be the case at all in deeper conditions.

I use them for steep backcountry skiing.

Frank, is the bmt that much different?
I don’t find the katana too nervous, feels quite damp.

Thanks Dan. They look fragile, but without putting time in them, I’d never know. Sorry your experiences have been that way…
