Such a great list! I especially agree with #1. The more you know, the more you know that you don’t know. Even the safer spring snowpack can harbor big surprises.

This is a great list. I still consider myself a novice, but having a mentor is incredibly important when it comes to backcountry. I’ve learned more from the handful of days with him than I did in the entire course. Second, backcountry skiing does in fact change you and I enjoy the time immensely in the wilderness but it has also made me appreciate the days I get lift-served skiing in that much more.

You might die. If you don’t , eventually someone you know will. Sorry to be blunt but it’s a fact you must consider before partaking in this sport.
Everything fun carries an element of risk. Some things more than others.
