I too almost learned a terrible lesson the hard way.

For a late spring (I think it was June) walk-up of Castle,
I left my crampons in the truck in favor of (lighter weight) micro spikes.

They worked great in the morning on the frozen crust.

However on the down climb around noon, the surface had turned into
a couple of inches of slush over hard ice. The micro spikes were useless.

I took a 50 meter uncontrolled snow slide – finally stopping with my butt hanging
on the edge of a 10 meter precipice with a boulder pile below.

I now carry my crampons WHENEVER there is the possibility of ice or snow.
