5 Things Backcountry Skiers Should Stop Doing

It’s that time of year- Festivus! And part of Festivus is the airing of grievances. No, these aren’t 5 things backcountry skiers should stop doing that have anything to do with something important, like avalanche safety. They aren’t things that are going to get you killed. These are just things that annoy me- so take it with the grain of salt and humor that is intended here. Chances are, most readers will even do some of these things, especially the last one. So here you go, my Festivus airing of grievances in 2017:

Dumb Things Done Part 3 of 3

“Dumb things” is probably a little bit of a strong statement for what I hope these blog posts will be. Perhaps “Avalanche mistakes I’ve made and the lessons I’ve learned from them” would have been a more appropriate title, but missing the eye-catching alliterative aspects of this one. Part 1 can be found here, and part 2 is here. It is my hope that these posts will at the very least offer something to the reader to learn from, since near misses are less talked about…

TBT TR: Skiing North and South Diamond Peaks (26 Feb 2016)

Many of you are familiar with the Throwback Thursday trip reports I’ve been doing during the last two ski seasons, where I featured all the Colorado fourteeners that I skied. While the fourteener portion of that came to a wrap last spring, the Throwback Thursday reports themselves are back in action. The first Throwback Thursday report of this season begins with a ski of North and South Diamond Peaks in northern Colorado just last year!

My Condundrum on Conundrum Couloir

It’s August, and it’s that time of year when many people start to look ahead, dreaming of snowflakes and skiing. For me, I pretty much think of skiing all the time year-round, even though I don’t typically ski year round. Which is why this post hurts the most. I won’t be skiing this coming winter… or spring. That bites hard into the deepest part of my core. Skiing is my being. It’s who I am. It’s what I do. Perhaps that’s why I waited so long to write the report. Although, I’d like to say it was because I decided to wait until people were having thoughts of skiing again. But in reality, I had a conundrum on Conundrum. And it will be my last ski for a very long time….

Apache Peak 6.19.16

Mid June skiing on Apache peak in the Indian Peaks Wilderness on the front range of Colorado! Apache doesn’t require the longest of approaches, it’s still a 13 or 14 mile day, and most of that was spent with the skis on the back. It would be a bit shorter if the road was open past Brainard lake, but unfortunately it’s almost always closed there- at least when the skiing is still good. At least the trail was heavily trafficked and in good shape, so we made good time to Lake Isabelle…

Sundance Mountain 6.18.16

As the snow finally starts losing the battle with summer, I find myself less and less inclined to ski. Not because I don’t enjoy it- I still do. And summer snow can be really fun. But hiking for miles and miles just to reach the snow starts to lose a lot of allure for me. Brittany, on the other hand, will keep going until the snow gets really bad. With this in mind, we chose something with virtually no approach- Sundance Mountain…
